"Triggered" director My Linh Tran

#FF Friday Fundraisers for Feb. 3, 2017

2017 Oscar nominations were announced last week without many surprises especially when it comes to representation for women as directors, sadly. FOUR major categories lack female-directed films, but as an eternal optimist, I’d like to share the highlights where the Academy successfully recognized women’s excellence in directing.

First, Ava DuVernay received a nod for Best Documentary Feature for “13TH”.  While on set for A Wrinkle In Time, Ava was presented with a congratulatory cake. The moment was captured and put up on young actor, Deric McCabe’s Instagram account.

Generally, women are recognized for excellence in directing non-fiction/documentary film way more often than fiction film. So in similar form, Documentary Short Form Academy selections include “4.1 Miles“, directed by Daphne Matziaraki and “Joe’s Violin”, directed by Kahane Corn.

Finally, there’s Maren Ade, earning a well-deserved nod in the Best Foreign Language Film category for Toni Erdmann.

Congratulations to them all! May the numbers only ever increase in years to come!

Part of growing these numbers is growing the talent of young filmmakers and DIY directors. Below is the updated list of films crowdfunding their projects today. While we support the box office, we can also support these up-and-coming directors. As always, be sure to update us on your crowdfunding projects so we can include it in a future post! Thanks for adding your $ and voice (or tweet!) toward the empowerment of the artists below!

Reminder: All of the projects listed below have female directors at the helm OR they are projects that benefit women directors (e.g., film festivals, funds, etc).  The campaigns at the top of the list are the ones ending soonest, so get in there and support ASAP (with $$ or an RT on Twitter). Click the titles to go directly to each project’s crowdfunding page, those in italics are new additions this week.

Thanks for visiting and thank you very much for helping us support and raise awareness about WOMEN DIRECTORS AT WORK!
